Game #26 - Ayr Vics 11 vs Pt. Burwell Lakers 9 (8 innings)

Scheduled: Fri Aug 21 @ 8:30pm

Ayr Vics Game Report:

This was a wild game as both teams threatened offensively all night. Ayr opened the scoring in the top of the second as they pushed across 6 runs on three hits and three walks off Lakers starter Ryan McCurdy. Josh Yost and Mark Koebel each drove in two runs in the frame.

Burwell answered back in the home half as they scored four on only one hit as Vics starter Dan Wakeford struggled to find his control. Wakeford walked four and hit a batter in the frame but managed to close the door with the bases loaded.

Wakeford was all alone in the pitching column for the Vics on this evening so his club was counting on him to right the ship and he did so by setting down the next six batters.

Ayr added a run in the fifth as Rick Gervais drove home Graham Scott off reliever Kevin Schneider but once again Burwell answered with three in the bottom half. The Vics right fielder made a great attempt to track down a fair ball down the line but crashed the fence at full speed and lost the ball. Three runs cleared the bases and the game was tied.

The Burwell defense started to break down in the sixth as a pair of errors and a walk loaded the bases with none out. Ayr pushed across two runs on a groundout by Ken Sherk and sac fly by Mark Koebel to retake the lead. Burwell closed the gap in the bottom half on back to back hits by Darryl Rodgers and Joe Scratch which plated one and then tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as a leadoff walk scored on a single by Jamie Neville. The winning run was left on second as Wakeford struck out the final two batters to send the game to an extra frame.

Mark Perry led off the eighth with a double for the Vics then after a pair of walks loaded the bases it was a dropped ball at the plate following a grounder that led to the go-ahead run. Graham Scott singled home an insurance run to give Wakeford some breathing room. The rookie was finally able to shut down Burwell in the home half allowing one hit but inducing three groundouts to end the contest.

Graham Scott and Rick Gervais each had two hits for the Vics as Ken Sherk, Mark Koebel had three RBI’s.
